Synopsis

«Once, a friend will betray you, and the enemy, in a key moment - will save your life!»

Filmed by Taras Khymych, ‘Alive’ – a Ukrainian historical drama – is set to premier in the fall of 2016. Based on real events that took place in the 1950s, the movie tells a story of a young Ukrainian girl who finds herself in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army camp while trying to evade persecution from the Soviet system. A couple of years before her death, Anna Popovych, on whose biography the movie is based, granted her permission to Taras Khymych to produce a screen version of her life’s events. Filming took place in Gorgany, a well-known mountain range in Western Ukraine, where Popovych’s real-life drama unfolded some 60 years ago.

1949. In remote regions of the Carpathians an MGB unit is hunting down for the last surviving Ukrainian resistance members. A young girl by the name of ANNA, attempting to run away and hide from the Soviet MGB, comes across insurgents’ camp. There, she meets NIKO, her childhood friend. However, following a surprise MGB raid, the insurgents split into smaller units and retreat deeper into the mountains. As a result, NIKO joins commander Dovbush’s unit, taking ANNA along with him.

A group of MGP troops, headed by major H and lieutenant ALIFANOV, continues to pursue the insurgents. ALIFANOV realizes that among the persecuted is the same ANNA, whom he questioned several years ago. The thoughts of that do not leave him. ANNA becomes unexpectedly useful for the insurgents, as she sees a dream, warning her of the looming danger. By sharing what ANNA saw in her dream with the insurgents she saves their lives. Popovych first saw prophetic dreams and had visions of the upcoming events when she was a kid. As a child, she fell down a well but managed to survive. Even back then, people believed that it was a sign from above. When winter comes, the insurgents build a kryjivka, a UPA bunker, where they hide from the MGP units until spring. ANNA and commander DOVBUSH fall in love with each other, much to the resentment of NIKO, who gets jealous and begins to hate the commander. At the same time, somebody gives away the insurgents’ whereabouts to the Soviets. The bunker is surrounded. By covering DOVBUSH ANNA gets hit by a bullet, which cuts off her hand. Attempting to save the insurgents’ archive, DOVBUSH is forced to flee. In order not to get captured by the enemy alive, ANNA tries to shoot herself and – after that fails – resorts to blowing herself up with a grenade. Miraculously, she survives and is captured by the MGB operatives, who take her to a hospital, where her life is saved. Soon afterwards, she meets her old enemy, lieutenant ALIFANOV, again. As a result, death becomes her only dream. However, the insurgents return and succeed in freeing her. Due to an intervention of a higher power, ANNA survives and lives on to go through all the other trials and tribulations that fate has in store for her.
